Effective July 1, 2026, New Jersey increased the Community Spouse Monthly Maintenance Needs Allowance (MMMNA) and related Medicaid income deduction standards for institutionalized individuals whose spouses remain in the community. The revised standards apply beginning July 2026 and affect Medicaid beneficiaries who require an institutional level of care, whether residing in a facility or at home.

  • Community Spouse Monthly Maintenance Allowance increased from $2,643.75 to $2,705.00.
  • Excess Shelter Allowance threshold increased from $793.13 to $811.50. Shelter expenses above this amount may increase the Community Spouse Monthly Maintenance Allowance.
  • Standard Utility Allowance remains $878.00 per month if the community spouse pays utility expenses directly.

Community Spouse Deduction:

To determine how much of the institutionalized spouse’s income may be diverted to the community spouse:

  1. Start with the base allowance of $2,705.00.
  2. Add excess shelter expenses above $811.50.
  3. Subtract the community spouse’s gross income.
  4. The resulting amount may be deducted from the institutionalized spouse’s income before calculating the Medicaid cost share.

Family Member Deduction:

Additional deductions may be available for certain dependent family members residing with the community spouse, including:

  • Children under age 21.
  • Adult children claimed as tax dependents.
  • Dependent parents.
  • Dependent siblings.
