Veterans may be eligible to receive up to $1,949 in non-taxable monthly income from the VA to pay for home health care, assisted living facility care, and nursing home care.
To receive the improved VA benefits, the following criteria must be met: (1) the veteran must have served at least 90 days on active duty in the military, ONE DAY of which was served DURING a war-time period (NOTE: active duty IN a war is NOT required). In general, war-time periods are: WWI; WWII (Dec. 7, 1941 – Dec. 31, 1946); Korean War (June 27, 1950 – Jan. 31, 1955); Vietnam War (Aug. 5, 1964 – May 7, 1975, or Feb. 28, 1961 – May 7, 1975 if the veteran served IN the country of Vietnam); Gulf War (Aug. 2, 1990 through a date to be set by Presidential Proclamation); and, (2) the veteran and his / her spouse must meet certain financial limitations and health standards.
IMPORTANTLY, the veteran and his / her spouse may be eligible for this additional monthly income even if the veteran did NOT retire from the military.
If you are not currently eligible, Donald D. Vanarelli, Esq., an Accredited VA Attorney (Accreditation Number 9747), can assist you in preserving your assets while qualifying for the additional VA income. (NOTE: The VA REQUIRES that ANYONE who assists a veteran or family member with the preparation, presentation and prosecution of a claim for benefits must be ACCREDITED by the VA BEFORE any assistance can be provided. Thus, to protect yourself in filing for benefits, confirm that your attorney or agent is accredited by the VA. To check, go to the “Accreditation Search” page in the VA website at https://va.gov/ogc/apps/accreditation/index.asp and type in the attorney’s name to confirm that the attorney has been accredited by the VA. Also, although an accredited attorney may charge a PRE-FILING consultation fee to assess whether there are any benefits you may be eligible for through the VA, NO ONE, including an accredited attorney, can charge a fee to assist you in preparing an application and filing an initial claim for VA benefits. Fees may be charged, however, by accredited attorneys and agents only, to appeal the denial of a claim for VA benefits.)
