Social Security Mandates Electronic Filing Of Disability Appeals

In a recent Federal Register Notice, the Social Security Administration (SSA) required lawyers who represent claimants on SSA disability appeals to file appeals electronically. According to the Notice, beginning on March 16, 2012, lawyers must use the SSA Internet Disability Appeals web portal at www.socialsecurity.gov to file reconsiderations or hearings on medically denied Title II (SSA) and Title XVI (SSI) disability or blindness claims. All papers must be filed electronically, including the appeals forms (Request for Reconsideration and Request for Hearing) as well as the accompanying Disability Report (Form-3441). The portal will provide users with an instant receipt that will acknowledge receipt of the appeal.

To help lawyers and others learn how to use the new electronic filing system, SSA will host a webcast entitled “Filing a Disability Appeal Online” on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at 1:00 P.M. EST. To register for the webcast, go to www.socialsecurity.gov/survey/iappealsrsvp.htm.
